Chargers zap Jaguars 52-6Chargers score six touchdowns in first half to cruise to victory over Renville County West
WESTBROOK, Minnesota (STPNS) -- WWG — After losing the two previous weeks to Edgerton and Mountain Lake Area, the Chargers got back in the win column with a victory over Renville County West. The Chargers winning the toss deferred to the second half electing to kick. Place kicker Aaron Hass nailed the kickoff putting it in the end zone for a touch back. Aided by a couple of penalties the Jags moved the ball down to the Chargers 30 where the Charger defense held the Jags turning the ball over on downs. On the first play Dana Madson romped 22 yards for what would have been a first down, but it was called back on a penalty. Then Andy Merrick picked up 15 yards to give the Chargers a first down. Madson then picked up a first down at the 40 of the Jags. Then Merrick broke free for 15 yards followed by a 25 yard dash to the end zone by Madson for the score. The two point conversion failed but the Chargers lead 6-0 with 5:14 to play in the quarter. On the next series the Jags were held inside their own 20 where the defense forced a punt. The punt left the Chargers in great field position at the 38 of the Jags. Two plays later quarterback John Elzenga connected with Madson for a 38 yard scoring play with 2:50 to play in the quarter. Elzenga found Hass in the end zone for the two point conversion making the score 14-0. On the next series the Chargers held the Jags to three downs and out forcing a punt. Receiving the punt was Merrick who returned the ball to the 41 yard line of the Jags. Then with 56 seconds left in the quarter Madson galloped 41 yards for his third score of the night. Elzenga completed a pass to Levi Bunting for the two point conversion making the score 22-0. In the second quarter the Chargers continued racking up yards and points. After receiving a punt at the Jags 40, Merrick returned it to the 42 of the Jags. The M and M boys shared the ball on the next 6 plays with Elzenga picking up 7 yards on a keeper before Madson scored his 4th touchdown of the night with 9:11 to play. Merrick ran it in for the two point conversion putting the Chargers up 30-0. On the next series the Charger defense stopped the Jags at the Charger 20. The Jags attempted a field goal but the Charger defense came up with a block and returned it to the 50 yard stripe. Two plays later Merrick broke through the secondary and romped 38 yards for the score. Elzenga hit Shane Buchman for the two point conversion putting the Chargers up 38-0. Again the Charger defense held the Jags to 3 and out forcing another punt. On the next series Buchman completed a pass to Bunting who raced 70 yards for the final touchdown of the half. The extra point attempt failed but the Chargers took a comfortable 44-0 half time lead. The Chargers received the kickoff in the second half and seven plays later Matt Otto scored on a 5 yard run, and Merrick tacked on the 2 point conversion on a run, making the score 52-0. Later in the 4th quarter the Jags scored, but the extra point attempt failed making the final score 52-6. Passing: Elzenga was 6 of 7 for 95 yards and 2 TDs and 3 extra points; Buchman was 1 for 1 for 70 yards and a TD. Rushing: Merrick had 132 yards on 8 carries, 1 TD and 2 extra points; Madson had 10 carried for 100 yards, and 2 TDs; Otto had 7 carries for 30 yards and 1 TD. Receiving: Madson had 2 catches for 78 yards and 2 TDs; Bunting had 3 catches for 81 yards a TD and extra point; Hass and Merrick each had a catch for an extra point. Punting: Walker Christians had 1 punt for 28 yards. Punt returns: Merrick had 2 returns for 41 yards. Kickoff returns: Merrick had 1 for 8 yards. Defense: Logan Weis had 11 tackles; Buchman had 10 tackles and 1 fumble recovery; Hass had 7 tackles and 1 sack; Bunting had 6 tackles and 2 sacks; Madson and Otto each had 6 tackles; Mitchell Jarmer had 1 tackle and 1 interception.
