WESTBROOK, Minnesota (STPNS) -- Curtis Ernest Nelson

    Curtis,77, died at his home Saturday, January 5, 2013.  

    Curtis Nelson was born on May 31, 1935 on the family farm near Hadley, MN to Albert and Elizabeth Kuehl Nelson.  He attended Country School District #115 and later Slayton High School. Curtis worked as a hired man and in March 1954 enlisted in the United States Air Force.  He acquired his GED during this time.  On August 28, 1955 he married Norma Lawrence.  Following their marriage they made their home on the Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, SC.  Following Curtis honorable discharge in November 1957 they farmed with Norma’s parents.  In 1959 they rented a farm north of Wilmont and farmed until 1971 when they sold the farm and moved to Wilmont.  Curtis then began trucking for Sather Cookie Company, eventually bought his own truck.  He retired in 1997.  Following his retirement he stayed busy doing summer trucking for Zinns of Lake Park, IA.  He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wilmont for over 50 years serving as Trustee and Elder.  Curtis loved spending time with family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He enjoyed shooting pool, hunting and fishing.  

    Survivors include his wife Norma Nelson , Wilmont, MN; children, Curtis Nelson, Sioux Falls, SD, Keeda (Dale) Pfundt, Windom, MN, Steven Nelson, LaSalle, CO, Allen Nelson, Sibley, IA, Deanne Nelson von Wald, Owatonna, MN, and Daniel Nelson and Lora Swank, Wilmont, MN; eight grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brother, Eldon (Elvera) Nelson, Hadley, MN, sister, Betty (Ernest) Engelkes, Slayton, MN, sister-in-law, Sadona Pearson of Shakopee, MN.  

    Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Lewis Nelson; grandson, Zachariah Nelson.

Elmer Alex Deutschmann

    Funeral services for Elmer Alex Deutschmann were held Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Lutheran Church of Our Savior, Windom, MN. Interment was at Pleasant View Cemetery, Dovray Township, Dovray, MN.

    Elmer Alex Deutschmann was born on September 1, 1922, in Murray County, Minnesota to the late George Alexander and Selma (Zoeller) Deutschmann. He received his education in Dovray Township and later received his GED in 1971. Elmer was baptized on October 8, 1922, in his home at the family farm and later confirmed on April 2, 1939, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Iona.

    On September 28, 1946, Elmer was united in marriage to Mildred Evelyn Lowe at the First United Methodist Church in Winona, MN. After marriage, Elmer and Mildred made their home in Dovray Township, Murray County, MN, Litchfield,  rural Windom where they made it their home for many years. Elmer was an insurance broker.

    Through the years, Elmer was a longtime member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Windom where he was actively involved with various offices including, Elder, Congregational Chairman and Trustee. He was a Presidential Elector, a member of the Minnesota Insurance Commission Board, a member of the Board of Directors for the Good Samaritan Society, active with the Farmers Union and the Minnesota DFL.     In July of 2011, Elmer became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom where he passed away on January 7, 2013, at the age of 90 years.

    Survivors include his children, Charles (Nancy) Deutschmann, Madison, S D; Evelyn Deutschmann, Estherville, Iowa; Edward (Gloria) Deutschmann, of Hastings; Steven (Ruth) Deutschmann, Mankato; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Grace Dalbotten, Denver, CO; brother-in-law, Donald Konz, Pine City; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

    Preceding  him in death were his parents; wife, Mildred E. Deutschmann; sisters, Hilda Deutschmann and Alice Konz.

Esther Paplow

    Funeral services for Esther Joyce Paplow were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at First Lutheran Church in Dundee.  Interment was in First Lutheran Cemetery in Dundee.  Online condolences may be sent via www.stephensfuneralservice.com.  

    Esther Joyce Paplow age 84 of Westbrook, formerly Dundee, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2013 at the Westbrook Good Samaritan Care Center.  

    Esther Joyce Paplow was born October 10, 1928 in Sibley, Iowa to Henry and Katherine (Janssen) Weets.  She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.  Esther attended Lime Lake Country School near Avoca.  Esther and her sister Ramona took care of chickens and sold eggs to raise money, with which they bought a guitar.  Her childhood dream was to go to Nashville and become a country singer.  On March 23, 1947 Esther was united in marriage to Raymond Paplow in Heron Lake.  Together the couple lived and farmed near Dundee until 1990 when they moved to Westbrook.  On September 29, 2003 Raymond passed away.  Esther entered the Fulda Nursing Home on September 30, 2009.  On October 23, 2009 she moved to Westbrook Good Samaritan where she has resided since.  Esther was a member of the Red Hat Society and long-time member of First Lutheran Church in Dundee where she was active in Ladies Aid, quilting club, and Bible study.  She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, and baking brownies, banana bread, and other wonderful goodies.  Esther loved watching the boy’s wrestling matches, Dundee boy’s softball tournament, the Vikings and Twins, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She also enjoyed fishing, cleaning ducks, geese, and bullheads, and comparing prices for grocery shopping.  

    Esther is survived by her children: James (Sherri) Paplow of Dundee, Donald (Paula) Paplow of Dundee, Linda (John) Madson of Westbrook, Ronald (Suzie) Paplow of Dundee, and Lee (Tisha) Paplow of Dundee; grandchildren: Ashley (Travis) Kottke, Kelsey Paplow, Johanna (Michael) Leonelli, Christopher (Amy) Paplow, Whitney Paplow, Chad Paplow, Curt (Shannon) Madson, Ryan (Juliane) Paplow, Lacey Paplow, Jace Paplow, and Ivy Paplow; and great grandchildren: Taelor, Ella, and Ava Leonelli, Jenna, Blake, Sophie, and Halle Paplow, and Raymond Paplow.  She is also survived by brothers: Richard (Mabel) Weets of Lakefield, Rev. Raymond (Joann) Weets of Des Moines, IA, Roger (Marcia) Weets of Lake Wilson, and Robert (Gail) Weets of Holland; and sisters-in-law: Lois Stark of Eagle Grove, IA and Alice Weets of Tyler.  

    She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Raymond, and siblings Geraldine, Lawrence, Ramona, Henry, Frank, Marjorie, and Jerry.
