WESTBROOK, Minnesota (STPNS) -- Ida Van Gelderen

    Memorial Services for Ida Mae Van Gelderen were held Friday November 2, 2012 at the Walnut Grove United Methodist Church. Private family burial is in the Walnut Grove Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent at www.stephensfuneralservice.com.  

    Ida Mae Van Gelderen, 95, of Walnut Grove died on Friday, October 26, 2012 at her home.  

    Ida Mae Van Gelderen was born April 11, 1917 in Sibley, Iowa to Jerry and Fannie (Voss) Janssen.  She graduated from Sibley Public School and in later years attended floral design school.  On September 11, 1940 she was united in marriage to Jake Van Gelderen in Sibley, IA.  They farmed near Sibley until purchasing a farm south of Walnut Grove in 1951, where they continued to live until their retirement in 1988.  The couple then moved to their home in town where Ida has resided since.  Ida worked as a florist out of her own home.  Ida was a charter member of the Holly Friendship Flower Club, and was a very active member of her church.  She enjoyed craft shows, crocheting, gardening, painting, cooking, and fishing.



    Survivors include her children: Jean (Bill) Johnson of Pine Top, AZ, Joyce Ewy , Jack (Vicki) Van Gelderen, and Gary (Sue) Van Gelderen, all of Walnut Grove; 8 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.  

    Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Jake on May 19, 2002; 5 brothers, and 3 sisters.  

William Lloyd Ashmore

    A memorial service for William Lloyd Ashmore was held Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church, Park Rapids, with Pastors Stephen Norby and Sara Jensen officiating.

    Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday, November 11, 2012 at 1 p.m. at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Armstrong, Iowa, with Pastor Vance Toivonen officiating. Inurnment will follow at Armstrong Grove Cemetery.

    William died November 1, 2012, at his lake home near Nevis, Minnesota, at the age of 73.

    Bill, son of William L. and Olive (Weaver) Ashmore, was born May 22, 1939, in Ellendale, ND. He graduated from Ellendale High School in 1957. He attended Ellendale State Teachers College graduating June 1961.

    That fall Bill began his 38-year teaching and coaching career in the public schools of Walnut Grove, MN, Mound High School, Armstrong High School in Armstrong, IA,     

    JoEllen Ruth Carlson and Bill were married on June 16, 1962, in Minneapolis.     He and Jo moved to their lake home near Nevis in November 2002.

    He enjoyed spending time with friends, family and especially grandchildren.

    In Armstrong, Bill was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Armstrong Betterment Club, Kiwanis and a charter member of Armstrong Heritage Museum. He served as mayor and was on the city council.

    After moving to Minnesota, he was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids, Nordskogen Lodge of Sons of Norway and a volunteer book sale worker for the Friends of the Park Rapids Area Library.

    Survivors include his wife JoEllen; sons Jeffrey (Lisa), Bloomfield, Iowa and Michael, Anchorage, Alaska; 1 grandson; 1 granddaughter; sister Elizabeth (Orlo) Sundre, Lubbock, Texas; brothers Thomas (Sally) Ashmore, Fairview, Texas and LaVern (Marilyn) Hedblom,f Mitchell, South Dakota; brothers-in-law Robert (Sherrie) Carlson and Harald (Nancy) Eriksen, ,Minneapolis, many other relatives and friends friends.

    Preceding him in death were his parents; sister Margaret Edwards;  parents-in-law Harold, Mabel and Astrid Carlson.
