WESTBROOK, Minnesota (STPNS) -- Mary Madeline (Alcorn) Brown

    Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Madeline (Alcorn) Brown will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 8, 2014 at St. Paul Catholic Church, Walnut Grove, MN.  Visitation is 5:00 Ė 8:00 pm Wednesday at the Walnut Grove Funeral Home with Prayer Service and Rosary at 7:30 p.m.  Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.  Online condolences may be sent at www.stephensfuneralservice.com.

    Madeline, 94, Albert Lea, formerly of Walnut Grove, died Saturday, May 3, 2014 at St. Johnís Lutheran Home, Albert Lea.  



    Mary Madeline Hughes, daughter of Thomas and Mary Margaret (Miller) Hughes was born October 27, 1919 in Griswold, Iowa.  She lived in Red Oak, IA, Shenandoah, IA, Corning, IA graduating from Corning High School in 1936.  After high school she worked at McClelland Drug Store, Corning, IA until her marriage to James C. Alcorn of  Walnut Grove, MN on April 17, 1945.  They farmed north of Walnut Grove moving to town in 1972.  She worked as a clerk at Butsonís Variety Store and in the Sentinel Tribune newspaper office in Walnut Grove. Madeline married John W. Brown of San Antonio, TX on October 4, 1997.  They wintered in San Antonio, TX  and in Walnut Grove during summer.  In August, 2009 they moved to Albert Lea.  Madeline dearly loved her family, cherished her relationship with the Alcorn family.  She enjoyed traveling, gardening, baking, playing cards, crocheting, and watching professional sports.

    Survivors include her husband, John, Albert Lea; son Steve (Cindy) Alcorn, Elk River; daughters: Patricia Alcorn, Duluth, Mary Helen Alcorn (Bee Thienprasit), North Oaks, and Anne Marie (Scot) Spates, Albert Lea; stepson Lee (Mary) Brown, Houston, TX; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.  

    Preceding her in death were her husband James - December 26, 1984; infant daughter Deborah; infant son Timothy; 14-year old son David; parents, two brothers,  two sisters.
