EDMONDS, Washington (STPNS) -- The Sound Singers of Edmonds sent a tape of themselves singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” last year to the Tacoma Rainiers, asking to sing for the opening of a baseball game.  The award-winning, all-senior choir got the OK, so they rode down to the Cheney Stadium in Tacoma for a game.

“It was a wonderful evening,” said Merilyn Beck, the assistant director and booking agent of the Sound Singers. “We sang before the game, of course, and then we got to sit in the bleachers and watch the game and have hot dogs and chips just like everybody else.”

This year, the Tacoma Rainiers contacted them.

The Sound Singers of Edmonds are scheduled to return to the baseball field to sing the national anthem for the Tacoma Rainiers at the July 11 game.

“They’re proud to sing the national anthem for anybody who wants them to sing for them,” said Bob Jones, director of the Sound Singers.  “And then we also enjoy going to the games.”

Formed in 2000, the Sound Singers sing songs from their era – mostly Glen Miller and Broadway tunes – for other seniors at retirement and assisted living facilities.  The choir also sings holiday programs and hosts fundraising events for its sponsor, the South County Senior Center.

“We bring joy, memories and familiar songs to our audiences,” Beck said.  “We find them singing the words or counting the rhythm of the song with smiles on their faces and some tears.”

The Sound Singers have sung the national anthem for the Seattle Mariners, the Everett AquaSox and the University of Washington’s women’s basketball team.

Not confining themselves to sporting events, the Sound Singers have also sung with the U.S. Navy Band and performed for governors Gary Locke and Christine Gregoire and U.S. senators Hillary Clinton, Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray.

Twenty five of the 62-member choir will go down to Tacoma in the senior center bus to sing and then watch the Tacoma Rainiers play against the Portland Beavers at the 7 p.m. July 11 baseball game.  David McNayr, executive director of the South County Senior Center, is joining them for the game.

“We are honored to have the Tacoma Rainiers ask the Sound Singers to sing the national anthem again,” Beck said.  “It will be a fun night for our seniors from the South County Senior Center to watch the Tacoma Rainiers play against Portland.”

The Sound Singers are thrilled that they get to go back, Beck said.

“We had a great ball doing it last year,” Jones said.  “It was great.  We had a great time singing for them, the game was good – they won – and at the end of the game they had fireworks.  We couldn’t have asked for a better time.”
