CLATSKANIE, Oregon (STPNS) -- Clatskanie Middle School wrestlers Jesse Oblack, Jaron Cruz and Brad White placed at a middle school wrestling regional at Woodburn High School on Saturday, and will advance to the middle school state championships, set this Saturday, March 11, at Woodburn High School.
CMS grapplers Mark Sherwin and Vince Heidemann also competed at the regional, but did not place.
The Woodburn regional, one of three in the state, hosted teams from 55 schools and approximately 388 wrestlers. The top six placers in each regional weight bracket advance to state competition, which begins at 9 a.m.
Oblack wrestled hard and strong at the regional, finishing second in the 165 pound weight class.
White finished fourth at 189. "Brad is doing a great job, - this is only his second year," commented team spokesperson Yvonne Robinson.
Cruz had the toughest day as he wrestled nine times throughout the day, losing only once, to take third in the 155 weight class, which boasted 31 wrestlers. (Due to a reporter's error, an article in last week's Chief inadvertently listed White instead of Cruz as the champion in the 155B weight bracket at the Columbia-Pacific District Wrestling meet on Feb. 25).
"Thank you to Randy Wemmer and Doug Wilson, for all their time and efforts to make it possible for these boys to be so successful," concluded Robinson.
