Buda teen gets 90 days in jail, seven years on sex offender list
BUDA, Texas (STPNS) -- Pete Solis, the Buda teen accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year old girl he met on MySpace, will spend 90 days in jail under the terms of a plea bargain reached by attorneys last Friday. Originally indicted on charges of sexual assault of a child, Solis had faced 20 years in prison and a lifetime registered as a sexual offender. The case made headlines in 2006 when the girl's family filed a $30 million civil lawsuit against MySpace, claiming the website failed to protect teenage users from online sexual predators. A district judge dismissed the original suit last year, and that ruling is currently under appeal on circuit court. Solis, then 19, said the encounter was consensual and he didn't know the age difference made it illegal. Under the plea bargain, Solis agreed to plead guilty to felony injury to a child. He received seven years deferred adjudication, and as a condition of probation he must see the inside of a jail cell. In a relatively unusual arrangement, Solis will spend 20 days in county jail every year for four years, with 10 days served in the fifth year. "He will be reminded of the pain he caused the victim," Payan said. Solis must register as sex offender for the seven year duration of his probation, but will avoid the lifetime registration. Solis cannot contact the victim, must attend sex offender treatment and counseling and any other counseling recommended by the probation department, must work or go to school full time and cannot use the internet unless approved by the probation department. He must also complete 180 hours of community service. The full psychological evaluation was not made public as part of the court records, but Payan said Solis was classified as a low risk offender. "I think the sentence accounts for any public safety risks for the defendant," Payan said. "He definitely has a hard road ahead." Solis's attorney, Adam Reposa, did not return calls for comment.
