Catron County Family To Perform At Gathering Of Nations
SOCORRO, New Mexico (STPNS) -- A husband and wife duo from Catron County will be performing along with their daughter at the Gathering of Nations in Albuquerque at 10 a.m. April 26. The Wind Spirit Drum share their Eastern Woodland Native American culture and music through their flute and drum performances, according to a press release from the duo. Their traditions and customs emerge through song and storytelling performance art. Windwalker and Spirit Buffalo, along with their daughter Anagqus, will perform on stage 49 at the Gathering of Nations. Anagqus dances her traditional Cherokee Shawl Dance with the accompaniment of her parents? music. Wind Spirit Drum performances have entertained audiences from Maine to Florida, performing on the Pow Wow circuit for six years. In 2000, they drummed at the United Nations for Leonard Pellitier. While performing with their brother, Michael Searching Bear, they were nominated for six Native American Music Awards in 2006. In 2007, the group won a Just Plain Folks music award. The group performed at Expo New Mexico in 2007, sharing their culture with the state fair audience. Windwalker, of Lenape, Mic-Mac and Cherokee descent, is the flutist and singer, enthralling the audience with her voice and musical storytelling. She has been around music her whole life, according to the release. Windwalker is also a third-generation Native American healer, who learned her healing from her Mic-Mac, Ogoala Souix grandmothers. She now passes her knowledge to her daughter. She is also a licensed massage therapist, working on people of all cultures, including Santa Domingo, Navajo, Hopi, Acoma and Apache. Windwalker is the Lenape Nations Turkey Clan Chief and is of the Fox Clan. In 2007, she danced in the All Nations Gathering in Albuqueruqe. Spirit Buffalo, of Mic-Mac and Cherokee heritage, is the group?s resolute drum, a Sundancer and Sundance Chief and a Lenape Nations Second Chief. Spirit Buffalo is a published creative writer and illustrator, which becomes apparent by his lyrics and music, the press release stated. He has several higher education degrees and pursues knowledge in everyday life, thus adding to his devotion to share his heritage with his audience. He is proudly a Vietnam veteran. Anagqus is a Cherokee shawl dancer and her elation for life is present in her expressive dance.
