COMMUNITY
MV Swap Meet Brings Droves Of Shoppers
OVERTON, Nevada (STPNS) -- The largest community swap meet in Moapa Valley took place on Saturday, March 15. Valley residents and travelers from the north and south spent Saturday morning shopping at the third annual community-wide Moapa Valley swap meet. This year there were 15 registered yard sales not to mention the numerous private sales utilizing the day for their own yard sales. The 15 registered yard sales were listed on a map with directions to help shoppers get around. Rotarian Chris Green coordinated the event and has spent countless hours making sure the day would be a success. The Rotary Family Charity sale was stationed in the Lin?s parking lot this year. ?This is a great spot,? stated Green. Green and her volunteers set up Friday night and hadn?t even gotten everything off the truck when people were looking to start shopping. All money raised by the Rotary Club stays local. ?We hope to bring out of town shoppers as well as local shoppers with this swap meet,? said Green. Additional stops included several private families and non-profit organizations including the New Hope Christian Church, Cinderella Pageant, Cactus Cruiser Car Club. Even the Decor and More got into the swing of things to do some spring cleaning. Many stops included coffee and treats to start the day off right. The majority of listed stops were in Overton and Logandale with one in Warm Springs at the home of Butch and Mary Schraft. The community swap meet idea began in 2005 with a great idea from Virginia Powers. Chris Green has taken the reigns and in 2007 the next swap meet took place. The 2008 swap meet has definitely shown signs that this is what shoppers want. ?It just makes good sense? says Green. Green explained that so many items are left over at the end of the day that next year she will be looking to bring Desert Industries to the valley to pick up what is left. So shoppers, looks like a 2009 community wide swap meet is already in the works. The community wide swap meet is put together by the Moapa Valley Rotary Club and Moapa Valley Chamber of Commerce.
