SOCORRO, New Mexico (STPNS) -- Federal authorities arrested a Magdalena man on charges of assault and criminal damage to property Wednesday after an incident Monday at the Magdalena Post Office.
Magdalena Marshal Larry Cearley said 22-year-old Reggie Rael was served with an arrest warrant and taken into custody by federal authorities Wednesday afternoon.
?He was taken to jail under the assault and damage charges,? Cearley said. ?Any other charges will be heard in federal court.?
According to the Marshal?s statement, Rael came in to the post office about 12:15 p.m. Monday and asked Postmaster Greg Vivian to give him the address on a package that had been dropped off earlier that morning.
When Vivian refused to give him the information, Rael jumped over the counter and tore an address label from one of the packages, according to the Marshal?s report. The report states that Rael then jumped back over the counter, cracking the glass top, and left the post office.
Cearley said Marshal?s deputies arrived about two minutes later in response to a 911 call.
The Postal Inspector and the U.S. Marshal?s office in Albuquerque were immediately contacted.
?Crimes involving the Postal Service are under federal authority,? Cearley said. ?We waited on the arrest until a warrant could be served by federal officials.?
